Words from Wade

I recently read a article by Dan Reiland about God doing big things in small churches.  This article caught my eye because we can all agree on two things.   First, we are a small church, and second we are doing big things in this community.  Whether its seen or unseen, this congregation makes a big difference in this community.
The article asks church leaders four important questions, Is your church culture healthy? Is the Gospel being taught? Is there vision for reaching people? Are lives being changed?

Church Culture
I believe our church culture has come a long way recently. I have heard many say what a joy it is to come to church and worship with each other.  We even stick around for coffee and fellowship, and I know its not for the great tasting coffee, maybe for the cookies though.

Gospel
I don't think anyone can argue if the Gospel is being taught each Sunday.  Whether it’s Lawrence or any of the worship leaders, a commitment to teaching the Gospel at Maria is evident.

Vision for reaching people and are lives being changed?
We have an impact on the youth in this community, through Marias ark, and our support of the Beautiful you retreat, we plant seeds and share the Gospel and love of Christ with our youth.

The untold ways that we impact these youth is a powerful ministry in this community.
We also have individuals who reach out to community members in need and help and love them.   It is easy to get caught up on the question of how many were at worship Sunday.  I don't think God is keeping track of our weekly attendance the same way that we are, but I am sure he notices the impact that we have on our community in his name.
Yes, this small congregation is making a big difference.  I pray that we continue to grow our ministry, not only at Maria but also in the community that we serve.  May we never stop looking for new ways to be God's hands and heart in this community.
                                                                                                            God Is Good!!!

Maria Lutheran Church Council Minutes May 19, 2019
Council members attending were Peggy Brown, Hannah Uecker, Brian Dorr, Tim Johnson, Terri Johnson, Sara Wiseman, Reagan Hudson and Wade Hudson.
Tim opened the meeting.  Minutes were read and approved.
Peggy reported that we took in almost $10,000 in the month of April and she was able to put money back into the money market and it is now at over $58,000.
Tim reported that we received $9064 in general donations and $105 in special giving.  He said that first quarter general giving is up significantly compared to the first quarter giving 2018.
Financial reports were approved.
Wade gave us his Parish Assistant report.  He has been very busy visitations and going to community events.  He told us that he has had a hard time keeping consistent office hours but that with school being out for the summer that should be easier to accomplish.  We are very glad that we have a presence in the community going to as many events as he does.  We also feel the community is starting to notice.
New business.  A donation from Maria was given to the Women’s Resource Center of $100.  It was also discussed and approved that we would donate $250 to the Beautiful You program.
Wade told us that we have a potential wedding and would like for us to come up with a “wedding policy”.  We discussed a few things about this.  Tim is going to look through the old files and see if he can find what the previous policy was.  Wade will be consulting with Pastor Jeff at Trinity about the counseling.
Wade would like to get 2 racks or stands that we can put all our hand out materials such as the newsletter, devotionals, etc. and to put one in the church and one in the fellowship hall.
Peggy said the carpet in the fellowship hall needs to be cleaned.  Council approved for her to go ahead and make the arrangements as summer was a good time to get that done.
Wade said the heating and air in the fellowship hall is not functioning correctly.  Langmeiers came and looked at it and suggested we replace the element.  They will let Wade know what it costs before they order it.
Old business.  June 14th will be the Karin Gunderson harp concert.  The concert will begin at 7 PM and the public will be welcome.  Wade is going to start putting up flyers to advertise it.  It will be a free will donation to attend.  She asked that we either find a host family to put her and her assistant up for the night or pay for a hotel room.  Tim and Terri volunteered to host them.  We are inviting Trinity from Gothenburg and New Life from Paxton for a 6 PM meal.  We will be asking the congregation to provide lasagna and sides for this.
Wade also reported that the new audio system is coming along but isn’t done yet.  He is going to have someone else come in and look at it to see what they suggest.
We decided to not do a June meeting unless something comes up in the meantime.  No other date was set.
Respectfully submitted

Words from Wade

Each Friday night after work, Bubba would fire up his outdoor grill and cook a T-Bone steak. But, all of Bubba’s neighbors were Catholic....And since it was Lent, they were forbidden from eating meat on Friday. The delicious aroma from the grilled T-Bone steaks was causing such a problem for the faithful Catholics that they finally talked to their priest.
The Priest came to visit Bubba, and suggested that he become a Catholic. After several classes and much study, Bubba attended Mass, and as the priest sprinkled holy water over him, he said, "You were born a Baptist, and raised a Baptist, but now you are a Catholic." Bubba’s neighbors were greatly relieved, until Friday night arrived, and the wonderful aroma of grilled steak filled the neighborhood.
The Priest was called immediately by the neighbors, and, as he rushed into Bubba’s yard, clutching a rosary and prepared to scold him, he stopped and watched in amazement. There stood Bubba, clutching a small bottle of holy water which he carefully sprinkled over the grilling meat and chanted: You wuz born a cow, you wuz raised a cow, but now you is a catfish.

Lent is the season of preparation before Easter. The Lenten season is a time when many Christians observe a period of fasting, repentance, moderation, self-denial and spiritual discipline. The purpose is to set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ—his suffering and his sacrifice, his life, death, burial, and resurrection.
As we begin this season of Lent  March 6th, I encourage each of you to join us every Wednesday for a meal and fellowship with the high school youth group in the basement at 6:30, service begins at 7:00 in the sanctuary.  The high school youth group will be leading the services.
God is Good,  Wade

Maria Lutheran Church Council, February 24,  Meeting Minutes

Maria council met for the first time as a newly reorganized congregation.  At the annual meeting 10 members were elected to be on council.  Present at the Feb 24th meeting were Turner Dorr, Hannah Uecker, Sara Wiseman, Jeremy Martin, Chase Martin, Tim Johnson, Terri Johnson, Peggy Brown and Reagan Hudson.  Not present but  an elected member of the board was Brian Dorr.  Also present was Parish assistant, Wade Hudson.
Wade opened the meeting with a devotion and a prayer.
The first order of business was to elect officers:
The following were unanimously elected:
President – Jeremy Martin
Vice President – Turner Dorr
Secretary – Sara Wiseman
Treasurer – Peggy Brown
Financial Secretary – Tim Johnson
Newsletter editor – Reagan Hudson
Social Media Coordinator – Hannah Uecker
Council then drew numbers to determine the staggered terms that were needed for this first council meeting.  Serving a 1 year term is Hannah Uecker, Tim Johnson and Sara Wiseman.  Serving a 2 year term is Terri Johnson, Peggy Brown and Brian Dorr.  Serving a 3 year term is Jeremy Martin, Turner Dorr, and Reagan Hudson.
Also officially formed were two committees.  Building and Grounds committee will be Turner Dorr and Nick Hudson.  Worship committee will be Wade Hudson, Turner Dorr, Tim Johnson and Jeremy Martin.
Tim reported that we had a total giving income for the months of January to 2nd through first three Sundays in February of $11,077.
Peggy reported a net income of $717 for the month of January
Discussed the need to get back to donating to charities of our choice.  If we follow Gothenburg’s model the give 1/3 local, 1/3 national and 1/3 international plus a tithe to the NALC.  Will ask the congregation for people who would be interested in researching charities on each level and present to the council and congregation.

An upcoming charity event is the Deborah’s Legacy fundraiser banquet.  Jeremy moved to sponsor a table, Terri 2nd – motion passed.

Wade then gave his Parish Assistant report.  He has been busy with things such as Virginia Younghans’ funeral, several visitations, and meeting with Pastor Jeff at Trinity.  He also listed some of the upcoming events.

Wade also reported that we received our official acceptance letter from the NALC.
Wade had Cort Smith come and look at updating the church’s AV system.  They determined it was mostly functional except for the present camera.  A new camera that can be remote controlled so it can move and zoom in and out and a few cables that will be needed to get both the TV in the basement and the TV in the Fellowship hall properly hooked into the system will cost approximately $300.  Terri said she would use some of her mother’s memorial money and purchase said equipment.

Wade was also pleased to announce that a computer had been donated for the church office.
Building and Grounds Committee:  Turner reported that he is getting bids to work on the roof and trim of the bell tower.  Wade is going to talk to the insurance company to see if they have a list of contractors that we must use to do the work.
Wade also reported that the bus is needing some repairs that are probably going to be expensive.  He is going to get some bids so council can determine if it’s worth fixing or exploring other options.
Next meeting will be March 17 following worship.
Meeting was adjourned.

Wade Hudson, Maria’s Parish Assistant
At our Annual Congregational Meeting, we voted to fund the position of Parish Assistant, starting this month.   It is a part-time position to provide pastoral care to our congregation.  Wade will continue his training as a Parish Assistant under the NALC and Pastor Jeff Cottingham of Gothenburg.  Among his duties would be; working with the Church Council to coordinate the ministries of the church, assisting in planning and implementing worship, officiate at weddings, funerals, and baptisms, visiting members at home, in hospitals, and care homes, oversee Maria’s Christian Education programs, participate in ecumenical events in the community,  and plan Bible study and other events for the congregation.  We have been blessed by God for raising Wade up for this important function.  He will receive a salary of $400 a week for his services to Maria.

Words from Wade
“Lord God, You have called Your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that Your hand is leading us and Your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Amen. From the Lutheran Book of Worship.
I recently read this prayer in The Lutheran Prayerbook and thought it was descriptive of where we currently are as a congregation. I am so excited to see what God has planned for us. As we set out on this path together in Christ, I am very honored to be a part of this new beginning at Maria.
My office hours will be Monday and Tuesday at the Fellowship Hall from 1:30-5:30 and by appointment. Getting out to visit those in nursing homes, hospitals, and the homebound will be a high priority. I am putting a list together; please let me know of those who would like to have me visit. I plan to do visitations on Thursdays.
Please add my cell number to your contacts and you can call or text me any time, day or night, seven days a week. If I am unavailable, you can call or text Tim Johnson: Wade (308)530-2963, Tim (308)520-7591 God is Good!   Wade
