Words from Wade
Each Friday night after work, Bubba would fire up his
outdoor grill and cook a T-Bone steak. But, all of Bubba’s neighbors were
Catholic....And since it was Lent, they were forbidden from eating meat on
Friday. The delicious aroma from the grilled T-Bone steaks was causing such a
problem for the faithful Catholics that they finally talked to their priest.
The Priest came to visit Bubba, and suggested that he become a Catholic. After several classes and much study, Bubba attended Mass, and as the priest sprinkled holy water over him, he said, "You were born a Baptist, and raised a Baptist, but now you are a Catholic." Bubba’s neighbors were greatly relieved, until Friday night arrived, and the wonderful aroma of grilled steak filled the neighborhood.
The Priest was called immediately by the neighbors, and, as he rushed into Bubba’s yard, clutching a rosary and prepared to scold him, he stopped and watched in amazement. There stood Bubba, clutching a small bottle of holy water which he carefully sprinkled over the grilling meat and chanted: You wuz born a cow, you wuz raised a cow, but now you is a catfish.

Lent is the season of preparation before Easter. The
Lenten season is a time when many Christians observe a period of fasting,
repentance, moderation, self-denial and spiritual discipline. The purpose is to
set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ—his suffering and his sacrifice,
his life, death, burial, and resurrection.
As we begin this season of Lent March 6th, I encourage each of you to join us every Wednesday for a meal and fellowship with the high school youth group in the basement at 6:30, service begins at 7:00 in the sanctuary. The high school youth group will be leading the services.

Maria Lutheran Church Council, February 24, Meeting Minutes
Maria council met for the first time as a newly
reorganized congregation. At the annual
meeting 10 members were elected to be on council. Present at the Feb 24th meeting were Turner
Dorr, Hannah Uecker, Sara Wiseman, Jeremy Martin, Chase Martin, Tim Johnson,
Terri Johnson, Peggy Brown and Reagan Hudson.
Not present but an elected member
of the board was Brian Dorr. Also
present was Parish assistant, Wade Hudson.
Wade opened the meeting with a devotion and a prayer.
The first order of business was to elect officers:
The following were unanimously elected:
President – Jeremy Martin
Vice President – Turner Dorr
Secretary – Sara Wiseman
Treasurer – Peggy Brown
Financial Secretary – Tim Johnson
Newsletter editor – Reagan Hudson
Social Media Coordinator – Hannah Uecker
Council then drew numbers to determine the staggered terms that were needed for
this first council meeting. Serving a 1
year term is Hannah Uecker, Tim Johnson and Sara Wiseman. Serving a 2 year term is Terri Johnson, Peggy
Brown and Brian Dorr. Serving a 3 year
term is Jeremy Martin, Turner Dorr, and Reagan Hudson.
Also officially formed were two committees.
Building and Grounds committee will be Turner Dorr and Nick Hudson. Worship committee will be Wade Hudson, Turner
Dorr, Tim Johnson and Jeremy Martin.
Tim reported that we had a total giving income for the months of January to 2nd
through first three Sundays in February of $11,077.
Peggy reported a net income of $717 for the month of January
Discussed the need to get back to donating to charities of our choice. If we follow Gothenburg’s model the give 1/3
local, 1/3 national and 1/3 international plus a tithe to the NALC. Will ask the congregation for people who
would be interested in researching charities on each level and present to the
council and congregation.
An upcoming charity event is the Deborah’s Legacy fundraiser banquet. Jeremy moved to sponsor a table, Terri 2nd –
motion passed.
Wade then gave his Parish Assistant report.
He has been busy with things such as Virginia Younghans’ funeral,
several visitations, and meeting with Pastor Jeff at Trinity. He also listed some of the upcoming events.
Wade also reported that we received our official acceptance letter from the
NALC.
Wade had Cort Smith come and look at updating the church’s AV system. They determined it was mostly functional
except for the present camera. A new
camera that can be remote controlled so it can move and zoom in and out and a
few cables that will be needed to get both the TV in the basement and the TV in
the Fellowship hall properly hooked into the system will cost approximately
$300. Terri said she would use some of
her mother’s memorial money and purchase said equipment.
Wade was also pleased to announce that a computer had been donated for the
church office.
Building and Grounds Committee: Turner
reported that he is getting bids to work on the roof and trim of the bell
tower. Wade is going to talk to the insurance
company to see if they have a list of contractors that we must use to do the
work.
Wade also reported that the bus is needing some repairs that are probably going
to be expensive. He is going to get some
bids so council can determine if it’s worth fixing or exploring other options.
Next meeting will be March 17 following worship.
Meeting was adjourned.
